New Content and A New Look for eHRAF World Cultures

The electronic Human Relations Area Files (eHRAF) database of full-text ethnographic field research, eHRAF World Cultures, is one of the best sources for the comparative study of cultures, and it continues to get better with expanding coverage of human cultures and new content.

The database now includes over 4,000 documents - many of them book-length studies - in full-text, representing almost 500,000 pages and covering 191 different human cultures across the globe. The database supports cross-cultural searching and browsing by a multitude of topics, and because each paragraph is indexed it is easy to zoom in to relevant passages, even in documents that are several hundred pages in length.

eHRAF's support team has developed a number of useful aids to help you learn how to use the database for efficient and effective searching. These include:

• A series of video tutorials covering all aspects of searching and browsing the collection
• A 12-page "Quick User's Guide" (in PDF) containing screen shots and illustrated examples
• A "visual tutorial" (PowerPoint converted to PDF) to provide you with an orientation to the database
• Free training webinars that can be scheduled with eHRAF staff (but please schedule a training class with Cheng Library staff first!)

The database is also rolling out a new and improved search interface, now available in beta at eHRAF World Cultures Beta. This new search interface will be refined over the next year and will replace the current version of eHRAF World Cultures in the summer of 2013, so try it now and let us know what you think. We will pass along any suggestions or recommendations you have to eHRAF staff.

Trial Access to 10,000 Palgrave Macmillan Ebooks Through November 9

From now through November 9, students and faculty have access to Palgrave Macmillan's complete ebook monograph collections on the PalgraveConnect platform.

Palgrave Macmillan currently offers some 10,000 scholarly ebooks in several subject areas, with a particular emphasis on fields in the humanities, social sciences, and business. The ebooks are compatible with most e-reader technology and citation software, with both PDF and EPUB formats available for downloading, and all titles are provided with permissive DRM (allowing for full title downloads, saving and printing).

The collection is especially strong in the follow subject areas (title lists in Excel format):

• Business and Management (title list)
• Economics and Finance (title list)
• History (title list)
• Language and Linguistics (title list)
• Literature and Performing Arts (title list)
• Political and International Studies (title list)
• Religion and Philosophy (title list)
• Social and Cultural Studies (title list)

Because this trial runs for only two months, we are not adding bibliographic records to the Cheng Library Catalog, but you can access all of the ebooks by going directly to PlagraveConnect and we will also include a link on our databases directory during the trial.

Try the CEIC Database for Macroeconomic Data in Global Markets Through September 21

Trial access to the CEIC Database portal is now available through September 21. The fourteen CEIC databases available during the trial offer extensive developing and developed markets macroeconomic data, with over a million time series covering economies from the U.S. and China to Vietnam, Bulgaria and Chile. CEIC Data has been helping economists and analysts make sense of the world economy since 1992. The online portal supports easy selection and downloading of time series data to Excel, The interface also offers a graphing tool, quick views of data, and essential mathematical functions.

The CEIC portal offers:

• Country-specific databases focused on five of the top emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and Indonesia);
• A WorldTrend database offering time series data for economists and analysts seeking worldwide benchmark and reference macroeconomic data. This database contains data on a broad range of hot topics concerning the global economy. Data is sourced from leading global data agencies;
• Highly detailed and organized regional data, including:
• A city database: 287 prefecture level cities covering benchmark indicators such as domestic output, loans, deposits, investment, government finance, employment, income & expenditures, retail sales, property market and utility, etc.;
• A Prefecture Level Region database: 53 prefecture level regions covering benchmark indicators such as domestic output, loans, deposits, investments, government finance, employment, income & expenditure, retails sales, property market and utilities, etc.;
• A county database: 2,000 counties covering benchmark indicators, such as industrial output, loans, deposits, investment, government finance, employment, income & expenditures and retail sales, etc.

• Standardized and detailed industry data, including:
• Value-added organization of data with relevancy to ISIC which enables sector analysts to perform sector analysis while easily referencing to international standards;
• Strong coverage of industry sectors such as machinery, metal, precious metal, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, textile, energy, real estate, auto, insurance, and tourism;
• Detailed data for industrial products output covering over 400 monthly outputs;
• Precise manufacturing industry operating data covering over 600 industries, based on China’s Division Standard of Industrial Enterprises Classification;
  Systematically organized Chain Retail and Chain Catering operational data covering different retail formats and breakdowns by 31 provinces and cities;
• Logically organized real estate developers’ financial data covering 31 provinces and cities.
• Daily housing transaction data covering 60 cities.
• Production, process, consumption, imports and exports, and inventory data covering 31 provinces and cities each systematically organized by energy type.
• Detailed insurance operating data covering 36 provinces and cities.

Have You Tried Scopus for Science?

The Scopus database provides wide access to peer-reviewed research in the sciences and social sciences, indexing over 18,500 journals, 400 trade publications, 340 book series, and 4.9 million conference proceedings. The database presently contains over 47 million records going as far back as 1823 and as up-to-the-minute as "articles-in-press" from over 3,800 journals. Every subject discipline in the College of Science and Health is extensively represented in Scopus, and the database's broad coverage provides in-depth, cross-disciplinary reach.

But Scopus offers much more than citations. For example:

• Links in citation records provide direct access to articles from the Library's subscription and open access collections where available.
• With a free personal account you can create search or citation alerts to be delivered to you via email or RSS feed.
• You can track citations forward and backward in the database.
• You can view detailed profiles of authors based on their publications.
• You can evaluate the impact of individual journals using a set of statistical indices accessible through Scopus.
• You can export citation records to our RefWorks bibliographic management software to create your own customized bibliographies.

Scopus is a powerful tool for research, teaching, and learning, and we urge you and your students to take advantage of what it offers. To help you get acquainted with Scopus, we are offering the following:
